Breaking the Silence: The Hidden Impact of Social Isolation on Our Seniors…
Breaking the Silence of Social Isolation: A Reflection from Dr. Tamiko Molèt, DNP, FNP-C
As a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and the proud founder of Molèt Health & Wellness, I have the unique privilege of caring for patients in ways that extend beyond medical treatment. One of the most impactful stories I’ve encountered recently came from a senior patient who spoke candidly about their struggle with isolation—a story that inspired this reflection.
At Molèt Health & Wellness, we see how social isolation affects seniors—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. For many, it’s not just about being alone; it’s about feeling disconnected, unseen, and longing for the independence they once had.
Social Isolation: A Silent Health Crisis
Social isolation is more than loneliness—it’s a health crisis that touches every aspect of a person’s well-being:
Emotionally: Many seniors feel forgotten or invisible, which leads to sadness, anxiety, and depression.
Physically: Prolonged isolation has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and weakened immunity.
Mentally: Without connection or stimulation, cognitive decline and memory loss are more likely.
Spiritually: Feeling disconnected from others often diminishes hope and a sense of belonging.
As an FNP, I believe in treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. My patient’s story reminded me that true care goes beyond prescriptions and check-ups; it includes fostering meaningful connections and community.
